NEW HAMPSHIRE In one N.H. city, support for the president runs deep Clinton can count on Portsmouth backers, as primary nears

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. -- When Bill Clinton was running for president in the New Hampshire primary, he stood in front of a department store here and shook hands with passersby. Nancy Seagren wasn't sure about Clinton then -- she liked Jerry Brown, who was holding a rally on the other side of Market Square.

Three years later, the department store has changed into The Gap and Seagren has turned into a Clinton supporter. A little more than a year before the 1996 primary, as Republicans and even Democrats criticize the president, Seagren is glad Clinton was elected.
