The appeal of symmetry
|
When a female scorpion fly goes mate-shopping, she has an eye out
for the males with the most symmetrical wings. Female swallows
almost always go for the guys whose tails form the most perfect
V-shape.
And the appeal of things symmetrical is not limited just to
members of the opposite sex.
When a German scientist in the 1950s put birds, monkeys and other
animals into cages with an assortment of hand-made cards, to see what
they would do with objects that were expected to be meaningless to
them, what happened was anything but random.
