Four years ago, the state's gay community recoiled from Democratic gubernatorial nominee John Silber and rallied behind Republican William Weld so fervently that some analysts chalked up Weld's 75,000-vote victory to his gay support.

This year, by contrast, both Weld and Democratic nominee Mark Roosevelt appear to have equal claim to the gay vote, since they are both staunch supporters of gay rights.
