Amy Clampitt, poet who earned Guggenheim Fellowship; at 74

Amy Clampitt, the poet who began her career at the age of 63 and
went on to earn a Guggenheim Fellowship and a MacArthur Grant for her
baroque images of modern society and the natural world, died of
ovarian cancer Saturday in her home in Lenox. She was 74.
Ms. Clampitt authored five collections of poetry. Her first,
"The Kingfisher," published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1983, was acclaimed
one of the most brilliant recent American literary debuts. The
collection was hailed in the New York Times Book Review by Richard
Tillinghast, who wrote that Ms. Clampitt "immediately merits
