Although DNA fingerprinting has been called "the ultimate
identifier" of blood, semen and other specimens in crime cases, its
path from laboratory to courtroom has had nearly as many twists and
turns as the DNA double helix itself.
When the technology was introduced in the mid-1980s, it seemed
that the fingerprinting -- identifying an individual through the
unique genetic blueprints contained in his or her cells -- would soon
be in routine use.
More versatile than traditional fingerprints, DNA typing can be
far more precise than identification based on an individual's blood
