Moose-and-vehicle collisions have state on sign campaign

ALBANY -- Drive through the North Country, along the scenic, windy
and wooded Kancamagus Highway, and turn the bend to see dozens of
people rushing from their cars to gawk and exclaim over a big placid
creature wallowing in the mud.
Such is the circus scene when motorists see a moose on the side of
the road in New Hampshire. But moose are often involved in human
tragedy, too. From 1991, when the state began keeping a record,
through the end of 1993, there have been 211 reported collisions
between motor vehicles and moose. Five people have died.
