In 14th-century Portugal, Dom Pedro, heir to the Portuguese throne, and Dona Ines de Castro, daughter of a Spanish aristocrat, fell in love. Pedro's father, Alfonso V, forbade them to marry. So they eloped. Alfonso had Ines murdered. When Pedro became king, he had the hearts of the murderers served up on a silver platter. Not satisfied with that, he went one step further, exhumed his beloved's corpse, crowned her as his queen, and forced the royal court to kiss what was left of her hand.
