Robert Taylor is the retired chief book critic of the
Globe.
Once, as James Russell Lowell was striding between Cambridge,
where he taught full time at Harvard, and the Boston office where he
edited the Atlantic Monthly, his hat, stuffed with manuscripts, blew
off into the Charles and sank. Lowell's staff consisted of himself;
his assistant, Francis Underwood, who had initiated the idea of the
Atlantic; and a Mr. Nichols, who read proof. How they produced the
issue without dredging the Charles is unrecorded.
