SAINT JOHN, New Brunswick -- Among the hundreds of old-time items on display at Barbour's General Store in downtown Saint John is a bar of Surprise Soap. But that's not the only surprise in downtown Saint John.

The city has been working hard in recent years to turn the area into a kind of showplace by the sea. Nowadays, there are festivals, museums, malls, whimsical sculptures and an aquatic activity center, with the promise of more to come.
