At: Symphony Hall, last night.
One of the Boston Symphony Orchestra's noblest traditions is the
composer-conducted concert. The BSO's second music director, Henri
Rabaud, was a composer; Ravel, Prokofiev, Copland and Stravinsky
conducted concerts, and in more recent seasons so have Michael
Tippett, Gunther Schuller, Peter Maxwell Davies, Oliver Knussen and
the late Witold Lutoslawski.
Last night was the turn of Luciano Berio, who brought along one
work of his own, his Concerto No. 2 ("Echoing Curves") for Piano and
