WASHINGTON -- The case of alleged CIA spy Aldrich Ames has propelled the Central Intelligence Agency back into its past, to an eerie world of deception, silent suspicion and introspection.

Since 1985, Rick Ames, as he was usually known, and his Colombian-born wife are alleged to have inflicted more damage on US espionage efforts against the Soviet Union and Russia than any other spy before them.

Ames, who was arrested last week, may have betrayed the names of at least 10 CIA "human assets" in Russia, leading almost certainly to their executions by the KGB. He also is charged with ...
