The Rev. Samuel S. (Tobe) Johnston, former rector of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Wellesley, died Friday of congestive heart failure. He was 83.

Rev. Johnston, an Episcopalian minister, was born and raised in Eccleston, Md. He attended Johns Hopkins University and graduated from the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Va. He received an honorary doctor of divinity degree from the seminary in 1967.

While at the seminary, he organized a congregation in the Appalachian Mountains. He met and married his wife, Eleanor King, in 1936. The couple then moved to his first parish in ...
