Senate votes to kill no-fault insurance Bill calls for mediating claim disputes

The Senate voted last night to replace the once-pioneering no-fault automobile insurance system Massachusetts adopted in 1970, despite a well-financed media and lobbying blitz by insurance companies desperate to preserve no-fault.

A bill sponsored by Sen. Linda Melconian (D-Springfield), the Senate chairwoman of the Committee on Insurance, passed last night by a 24-11 vote, after hours of debate between senators who predicted it would save drivers money and those who forecast even higher insurance premiums.
