BRAINTREE -- Art provides unique opportunities for students to express themselves creatively. But too often, the study of art is a nicety rather than a necessity.

Adding insult to injury, many students think of art as an easy elective, says according to art teacher Jim Coughlin, honored last year as a Terrific Teacher Making a Difference by the Calesa Foundation of Aspen, Colo.

But at Archbishop Williams High School in Braintree, where Coughlin teaches, word is out: Art class is cool and it's not a gut course.
