It is 1854, and you are a visitor to New York City's fabulous
Crystal Palace Exhibition documenting progress in industry and the
arts. You join a crowd watching as a bearded man in a frock coat and
top hat solemnly announces that he is prepared to risk his life to
demonstrate his invention. He stands on an open platform that begins
to rise toward the ceiling of the cavernous hall.
Powered by a chugging steam engine, a drum winds a rope that lifts
the platform, steadied by vertical guid...
