When I saw a sign for a sports collectibles show at a shopping mall last month, I remembered a forgotten promise made to myself years ago. A few minutes later I was approaching a gray-haired dealer with my request, and the two of us began sifting through piles of 1950s-era base ball cards. "I got one . . . here it is," the dealer said, and as he handed me the faded piece of cardboard I was suddenly eye to eye with someone I had never seen, but felt an odd compulsion to meet.
