State battles church over Russian icon

MOSCOW -- A 12th-century icon that is said to have miraculous
powers to protect Russia from danger has been endangered itself in a
bitter custody battle between the Russian Orthodox Church and state
museum curators.
Both sides claimed victory yesterday in their tug-of-war over
Russia's most venerated icons. President Boris N. Yeltsin ordered
the works kept under state ownership, but said the church could use
them for religious services.
