William Smith charged in brawl Says bar patron harassed him

ARLINGTON, Va. -- William Kennedy Smith, who was acquitted two years ago in a widely publicized rape case, was charged early yesterday with assault and battery after a bloody brawl outside a barroom.

Smith's attorney said yesterday the incident began when a patron recognized Smith inside the bar and made "insulting" comments about the rape trial to Smith and a woman with him.

Smith then went outside and fought with another man who Smith mistakenly thought was part of the group that was insulting him, said the attorney, Gregory B. Craig.
