After 441 years, Tatarstan wants its autonomy back
|
KAZAN, Russia -- It was 441 years ago that Ivan the Terrible
conquered Kazan, forcing the capital of the Tatar empire and its vast
lands under Moscow's rule. But to Rashat Safin, it may as well have
happened last week.
"The Tatar people today are waging a national liberation
struggle," Safin said a few days ago in his run-down office in what
is now the capital of Tatarstan, one of 20 tiny ethnic republics
dotting the map of Russia.
"Our objective is the restoration of statehood and independence
from Russia," he said.
