THREE GORGES Hugh dam may alter river forever
|
ON THE YANGTZE, Sichuan Province, China -- Ancient, ivory-white
mountains rise in surreal shapes, their sheer faces streaked in brown
and tan and fringed with twisted trees. Wispy clouds float among
towering peaks. Below roar the waters of the world's third-largest
river.
But it is not the stunning beauty of the Three Gorges of the
Yangtze that is bringing Chinese here in record numbers now. It is
because they believe that the roar will cease, and that some of the
fabled scenery soon ...
