ON THE YANGTZE, Sichuan Province, China -- Ancient, ivory-white mountains rise in surreal shapes, their sheer faces streaked in brown and tan and fringed with twisted trees. Wispy clouds float among towering peaks. Below roar the waters of the world's third-largest river.
