Cardinal Law holds `blue lights' permit backed by Roache

Cardinal Bernard F. Law has a permit to mount blue lights on his car, giving him the right to bypass traffic and police barricades.

State records show that Cardinal Law has had a permit since March 29, 1989, when then-Boston Police Commissioner Francis M. Roache, who is now running for mayor, vouched for the cardinal. Roache told the Registry of Motor Vehicles, which issues the permits, that the cardinal was chaplain of the department.
