Halberstam's '50s odyssey His new book gives the decade that begat the '60s its due

Asked what it was like to spend more than half a decade
researching and writing the history of an entire decade, the
seemingly somber 1950s, David Halberstam thinks for an instant. Then
he grins. "It was fun," he says.
Most Americans, even -- or maybe especially -- those who lived
through the '50s, are hard put to find much fun in a decade that
began with the Korean War and ended with the start of American
involvement in Vietnam. An era through which stalked the likes of
Joseph Stalin, Joe McCarthy, Fidel Castro and Richard Nixon.
