Jerusalem's Kollek, at 82, to run again

JERUSALEM -- Mayor Teddy Kollek, the greatest builder of Jerusalem since King Herod, seemed in recent months to be suffering the moods of Hamlet: To run, or not to run, for another term?

One day he insisted the city needed him. The next, he bowed out of the race, saying he was too old. Then suddenly, faced with a tough, attractive opponent, Kollek made his announcement.

He would run again for a five-year term because if he did not, the right-wing Likud party would gain control of the city at this most delicate stage in Middle East negotiations.
