Digital will set up wholly owned sales unit in South Africa

Digital Equipment Corp. joined the growing list of US corporations setting up operations in South Africa as that nation approaches the post-apartheid era.

The Maynard-based computer maker said yesterday it will establish a wholly owned marketing unit starting July 1 in Sandton, outside Johannesburg.

Digital Sales & Services South Africa (Pty.) Ltd. will start with five employees, growing to 50 workers within a year and 200 by the end of the fourth year, Digital said.
