WASHINGTON, D.C. -- All Frederick R. Leyland wanted was a dining room that would show off his collection of blue and white Chinese porcelain. As art patrons sometimes do, he reckoned without the competing concerns of the artist involved in the room's decoration. This was James Abbott McNeill Whistler, the American-born painter -- Lowell-born, in fact -- who was the toast of London.
