NAMES & FACES Charles Street Jail: a nice place to visit

To you it may be a once-overcrowded and now-vacant eyesore. But
to Paul McGinley, a local preservation planner, the Charles Street
Jail represents all that is good about Boston's 19th-century age of
granite. "It's not pretty, because jails weren't meant to be
pretty," McGinley said of the massive structure, now owned by
Massachusetts General Hospital and awaiting a decision on its fate.
"But don't forget: When it was built, it became a model, both
nationally and internationally, for prison design."
McGinley should know. He has seen a great deal of the eery old
prison from the inside, though ...
