Breast cancer, DDT tie is cited Pesticide's buildup in tissue is studied

For the first time, scientists have found significant evidence that exposure to DDT, the banned pesticide, may increase the risk of breast cancer.

Though too small to be definitive, the study suggests that an unexplained rise in breast cancer rates over the past 20 years may be part of a legacy of widespread pesticide use beginning after World War II.

Public health specialists said the study should sound a "wakeup call for further urgent research" on environmental factors in the disease.
