The most controversial race of Olga Markova's career is one she didn't run.

Despite her decisive victory in Boston last April in 2:23:43 -- the fastest marathon time by any woman anywhere in 1992 -- the federation that selected the members of the Unified Team for the Olympics last summer did not tap Markova for the squad.

The Russian marathoner was devastated. Although the federation had focused on the Los Angeles Marathon as its Olympic trial, Markova elected to run Boston and apparently believed that her outstanding time would not, could not be ignored.
