Gays hope to influence mayor race Candidates perceive a potent voting bloc

In another sign of the city's changing politics, candidates are already scrambling to cultivate support in the increasingly influential gay community, even though the race to replace Mayor Flynn has barely begun.

Last Tuesday, Councilor Rosaria Salerno met with gay activists at the Club Cafe to drum up support for her mayoral campaign. Just a few days before, Council President Thomas M. Menino held a similar meeting elsewhere in the South End.
