Culture city? Houston is hardly subtle, but it can be elegant

HOUSTON -- "Refined" is not the word that comes to mind when people say "Houston." "Refinery," maybe, as in oil, but certainly not "refined" as in "subtle, cultivated and elegant."

But cultivated and elegant is what this city turns out to be, although I'd stop short of "subtle." Houston's high culture is anything but. The competing sculptures outside skyscrapers suggest one bank president taunting another, like a kid in the playground: "Mine's bigger than yours." The opera house trumpets money.
