Judge derails deal for Brest Role in Mavroules case said to merit jail time

In a surprising development that could complicate the
government's efforts to prosecute Nicholas Mavroules, a key
prosecution witness who had been hoping for probation in exchange for
his testimony was told yesterday by a federal judge that he should
spend some time in jail.
Robert Brest, the former North Shore car dealer, was planning
to plead guilty in US District Court to one count of offering an
illegal gratuity to a congressman. He would have been the first
person to plead guilty in connection with the federal investigation
focusing on Mavroules.
