Will sacrifice fly? Clinton quickly learns a lesson: Tiptoe around that `S' word
|
Unlike last year's campaign, when he talked turkey, President
Clinton spent last week talking sacrifice -- or at least hinting at
it. In two speeches, he spoke of federal deficits, the middle class
and a call to arms. In doing so, he often evoked deja vu of the Paul
Tsongas and Ross Perot variety. Policies that candidate Clinton
derided last February as cold-blooded turn out to be part of this
February's presidential package of tax increases and spending cuts.
As Clinton went off to campaign for his $493 billion economic
