Kiril Taranovsky, 82; professor of Slavic languages at Harvard

Kiril Taranovsky, professor emeritus of Slavic languages at
Harvard and a noted scholar of Russian poetry and Slavic philology,
died Monday in his home in Arlington of cardiac arrest. He was 82.
Mr. Taranovsky was born in Yuriev, Russia, now Tartu, Estonia, and
grew up in Tartu, St. Petersburg, and Kharkov.
In 1920, in the aftermath of the Bolshevik revolution and during
the ensuing civil war, Mr. Taranovsky's father, a professor of Slavic
law, took the family to Yugoslavia, where in 1919 Mr. Taranovsky
graduated from high school in the Belgrade suburb of Zemun.
