AIDS has made fidelity fashionable. A fondness for strong
drink is now largely a foible of the fat and the unfit. Even such
habits as smoking cigarettes are regarded in some quarters as taboo.
Simply stated, old-fashioned vice has fallen out of favor. In
the modern confessional, short shifts and short shrifts are the order
of the day.
One peccadillo endures, however. By cleansing itself of the taint
of sin, legalized gambling has even managed to flourish. Like a
mobster buying a restaurant or Richard Nixon impersonating an elder
