WESTBOROUGH - Depending on who you ask, Ronald Skates is the
chief executive who will either save Data General Corp. or preside
over its demise.
Supporters say the former accountant has the right mix of
financial and managerial skills to pull the computer company out of
its painful decline. Critics call him a bean counter who lacks the
technical vision needed to steer it through the rapidly changing
currents of the computer industry.
