US, IRAQ HINT READINESS TO SEEK ACCORD BUT SADDAM HUSSEIN WARNS CHANCE OF WAR IS STILL '50-50'

WASHINGTON - Top US and Iraqi officials, while reaffirming their stark differences, hinted yesterday that they are ready to use direct talks between the two nations to search for a peaceful solution to the Persian Gulf crisis.

In separate television interviews here and in France, the officials made a series of tentative gestures that are being interpreted as signals that both sides are looking for a way out of the four-month-old crisis.
