In strictly classical terms, Lon Chaney's silent "Hunchback of Notre Dame" (1923) was never bettered. But Charles Laughton's 1939 remake, under a mountainslide of makeup, coincided with Laughton's own self-loathing to produce a characterization so flamboyantly self-abasing and grotesque that it's almost too painful to watch.
