WASHINGTON - A smiling Saddam Hussein was shown yesterday
meeting with Western hostages in Baghdad, patting the head of one
young boy and telling the boy he should be "happy" he is being used
to deter a US attack on Iraq.
The United States, which sent troops to Saudi Arabia after
Iraq invaded Kuwait on Aug. 2, condemned the televised appearance
by the Iraqi president as "shameful theatrics." Prime Minister
Margaret Thatcher of Britain called it a "repulsive charade."
Most of the hostages appeared to be British, although none was
