GLASS-TOPPED CANNING JARS DECLARED EXTINCT

Old-fashioned glass canning jars - the ones with the wire bail
closures and glass caps -- still make attractive decorations or
storage containers for dry food ingredients. However, one should no
longer use them for their original purpose: to can foods.
That's right, says Nancy Stutzman, home economist with the
Middlesex County Extension Service. Not only has the US
Department of Agriculture ruled them extinct for canning purposes,
but the nation's leading canning-jar company, Ball Corp., has
stopped manufacturing the jar rubber rings.
