Key Union Leaders Want Kirkland to Leave; Longtime AFL-CIO Chief Is Viewed as Unable to Meet Labor's New Needs

Key union leaders in the AFL-CIO have concluded it is time for
Lane Kirkland to step down as president of the 14 million-member
federation if organized labor is to meet the challenges of the
future.
If Kirkland, who will be 73 in March, does not step down on his
own, the union leaders said they are prepared to try to force him out
and replace him with Secretary-Treasurer Thomas Donahue, 66, until
they can agree on a long-term replacement.
