A. The Mach system honors Ernst Mach (1836-1916), an Austrian
physicist who developed an accurate method for measuring the speed
of bodies moving at high velocity. Mach set the speed of sound as
his standard. Although sound travels at various speeds according to
the density and elasticity of the medium through which it is
moving, the usual norm is its speed at sea level -- 1,100 feet per
