Brazen Theft at The Louvre; Security Questioned After Latest Incident

For the second time in just over a week, thieves have literally
ripped a treasure from the new wing of France's famed Louvre,
heightening fears over security problems at one of the world's
largest art institutions.
A thief - or, as museum officials suggested today, a vandal - tore
a battle-ax from a massive 17th-century sculpture by French artist
Martin Desjardins on Wednesday night, when the museum has late
visiting hours. The weapon had been screwed into the stone pedestal
and was certainly damaged during its theft, the officials said.
