Republican gubernatorial candidate Steven D. Pierce, who failed to file tax returns on time for five straight years, said yesterday: "I don't think I've done any great wrong to anyone other than myself."

Pierce, the House minority leader from Westfield, said in a telephone interview yesterday, "I have given greater attention to the public business to the detriment of the attention I should have given my private matters."
