John J. Landrigan of West Roxbury, former chairman of the English department at Boston Latin School, died yesterday at Faulkner Hospital after a series of strokes. He was 81.

The school's graduating students of 1979 dedicated their yearbook to this "scholastic taskmaster" on his retirement after 17 years there.
