STELA'S MESSAGE MAY BE KEY TO AN ANCIENT WRITING SYSTEM

One day in 1986, a fisherman waded into the sluggish waters of
the Acula River, in a swampy backwater of the Mexican state of
Veracruz. About 15 feet out, he stepped on a huge flat rock half
buried in mud and was surprised to feel with his bare feet an
intricate design carved in the stone.
When the slab was raised from the water, it proved to be an
eight-foot-tall monument weighing some four tons. The carving on
the 1,800-year-old stela, or commemorative monument, showed the
figure of a ruler or priest in full regalia, including an
elaborate headdress and feathered cape.
