For some, the food and the music were comforting, even uplifting. But for others, the relief that comes with a warm Thanksgiving meal and plenty of company was not enough to take away the peculiar sting of being homeless during a holiday.

"Look outside. It's like Christmas, not Thanksgiving," said an elderly man yesterday as he sat in the main hall at the Pine Street Inn in the South End. "When the food is gone and the singer is gone, we're back to square one."

The inn and about 150 volunteers served traditional Thanksgiving meals to almost 1,000 homeless men and women. Volunteers ...
