For Evelyn Murphy, last Monday was one of those days when the present and the future collide.

For months, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Murphy had dodged the new-tax bogyman, going so far as to lay out a budget-growth cap tantamount to a no-new-tax pledge. But when the House leadership put together an $855-million tax package, Murphy's chief of staff, Alix Smullin, said that Lt. Gov. Murphy would support it as a matter of "team spirit."
