An Emergent Urban Wetland

The lower C&O Canal is full again, not with water but
pioneering species of plants that have laid claim to the canal's
muck since it was drained for repairs last winter. They are an
aggressive lot, densely profuse, with some standing seven feet tall.
Rub some the wrong way, and they'll cut you open.
The canal has become a wetland in the heart of the city.
"These are typical emergent wetland plants," explains Olin
Allen, coordinator of the D.C. Natural Heritage Program. The species
are among those more commonly found near the headwaters of local
streams, where disturbance is frequent. ...
