ALGIERS - Novelist, poet and playwright Kateb Yacine, considered one of Algeria's finest contemporary writers, died in France yesterday of leukemia, the official news agency APS reported.

The news agency said Mr. Yacine, 60, died at La Tronche Hospital near Grenoble, France.
