State Treasurer Robert Q. Crane, one of the last great rogues of Massachusetts politics, emerged from a different era and seems somewhat out of place in today's impersonal political environment.

The 63-year-old Crane took office when Lyndon Johnson was president and Endicott Peabody was governor, a time when politicians were not ashamed to cut deals in backrooms. Crane jumped from the Massachusetts House into the treasurer's office when his lifelongfriend, John Driscoll, resigned before the end of his term to take the top job at the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority.
